Facebook Legacy Setting

This is Vanessa Collins, your Certified Digital Marketing Specialist with your Weekly Tech Tip. We need to have a hard conversation. No one wants to talk about this but as my mother would say when she would talk about things like this, “We have to take care of business.” If something were to happen to you, has someone in your family been designated to handle your Facebook account.

Facebook has a legacy setting that will allow a designated person the ability to handle your account in the unfortunate event that something happens, and you are no longer here.

Your legacy contact can:

  • Write a pinned post for your profile (example: to share a final message on your behalf or provide information about a memorial service).
  • Decide who can see and who can post tributes
  • Respond to new friend requests (example: old friends or family members who weren’t yet on Facebook).
  • Update your profile picture and cover photo.
  • Request the removal of your account.
  • Download a copy of what you’ve shared on Facebook, if you have this feature turned on.

To set your legacy contact, go to your settings and under General Account Settings, edit Manage Account.
