Audacity (you can find it at https://www.audacityteam.org) is a free, open source, cross-platform audio software that easy-to-use. It’s a multi-track audio editor and recorder that can work on all major platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux and other operating systems.
Audacity can record live audio through a microphone, mixer, or digitize recordings from other media. You can import, edit, and combine sound files. You can also export your recordings in many different file formats, including multiple files at once.
Audacity was developed by a group of volunteers as open source which means that (1) It is free and (2) There is a strong community of users that have developed a number of plugins which expands the software’s features and capability.
